City of Svetlogorsk, formerly known as Rauschen<\/h3>\n

The atmosphere of this city is unique and incomparable, with its coastal line featuring high cliff slopes, from which stunning views of the Baltic Sea unfold. The city itself is divided into three parts, Svetlogorsk 1, 2, 3.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Center – Svetlogorsk 2”<\/h3>\n
Strolling here is pure pleasure and maximum benefit. The city is green, with different tree species creating a beautiful aroma and providing shelter from the hot sun and sea breeze. The unique landscape allows you to walk both high up and down; here, not only the descent to the sea offers great exercise, but also many streets of the city will make you break a sweat. However, this is by no means a reason to fear too active walking tours; if desired, a gentler route can be chosen. For example, you can descend to the sea by funicular if you are on the left side of the city, and after a walk along the sea, you can take the lift back up, or vice versa.<\/div>\n

My favorite route starts from Yantar Hall. You can conveniently park your car there, as there are both paid and free parking lots. There is also a park right on the seafront, where you can enjoy a beautiful view from fairly high cliffs and observe ships through a spyglass.<\/div>\n

At the site near Yantar Hall, you can rent a bicycle and ride along the equipped bike path towards Otradnoye. The route passes through Lenin Street, where you can spot places you’d like to visit and simply explore the city. The bike path will take you far away; you can even reach Philin Bay, but that’s another journey, as is Otradnoye, which smoothly transitions into Svetlogorsk.<\/div>\n

“Count Kaiserling Promenade”<\/h3>\n
The promenade was built in 1904 and was named after the official who managed these territories. The promenade was constructed as a protective structure against dune erosion and also served as a recreational area for visitors. The upper level of the promenade ran along the cliff, where cafes and benches for resting in the shade were already located at that time. The lower level consisted of wooden decking and was intended for walks.<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It can be assumed that the sea was calmer in those times. By 1970, the promenade had already been made of concrete, and in 2019, after a severe storm, it suffered significant damage, and the captain’s bridge was not even restored. Many descents to the sea were destroyed, and the promenade itself was partially damaged.<\/div>\n

The newest promenade in our country is located here. Its length is more than two kilometers, starting from the sundial.<\/div>\n

“Modern Tragedy”<\/h3>\n
At the foot of the main staircase were the sundials, which could have celebrated their anniversary this year. They are listed in the Guinness Book of Records, recently received the status of cultural heritage of the region, and in a month, they awaited their verdict – demolition, in favor of the new promenade. The fate of such an incredible work is still unknown.<\/div>\n

The clocks, called “Zodiac,” were decorated with a mosaic of stone smalt brought from Lisichansk; the gnomon angle was set throughout the year. The official opening was in September 1974. There were 12 constellations on them. This place was a symbol of the city. The author of the masterpiece, Nikolai Frolov, was a graduate of the Riga Academy of Arts. There are still his works in the city. By the way, the second clock is located on the water tower.<\/div>\n

“History”<\/h3>\n
Let’s return to the walking route and head to Lake Tikhoe, where the history of the city began a long time ago. In 1258, the first settlement of the Prussians was formed here, called Ruze-Motore (burial place). Separated from the sea by a high dune, people here engaged in hunting and fishing. After the arrival of the Teutonic Knights, the life of the settlement took a new direction. They dammed the Katzenbach stream, flowing into the lake, and installed a mill on the stream. Since then, the lake has been called Mullen-teich (Mill Pond), and milling became the main occupation for the village residents. In the Teutonic times, it was the largest mill in Samland and one of the three largest in the world.<\/div>\n

Rauschen became a resort in 1820, with boarding houses and villas starting to be built here. In 1840, these places captivated Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Since then, dunes and the coastline have been planted.<\/div>\n

In 1912, the funicular started operating.<\/div>\n
In 1908, the water treatment tower was built, which to this day remains a symbol of Svetlogorsk. By the way, a small part of the mill, near which life in this area began, has remained in the forest strip near Lake Tikhoe.<\/div>\n

Today, the lake is landscaped, and you can enjoy delicious snacks and spend pleasant time here. In the forest near the lake, there is a rope park, a playground, many places to relax, and admire the magnificent view; you can even take a ride on a catamaran. And there is also a tree here that is 700 years old; it has amazing energy, I recommend hugging it.<\/div>\n

“German Tunnel”<\/span><\/h3>\n

Everyone knows only the main entrance to the city, and even few locals are aware of the second picturesque route, which, by the way, is convenient for bypassing the traffic jam that forms due to a railway crossing where a train passes very often.<\/p>\n

So, if you take the road that is to the right of the lake, you will immediately come to the old German tunnel. You can go through it carefully, or, if you prefer, you can use the stairs to go up. The road there is very picturesque and leads from Svetlogorsk 2 to Svetlogorsk 1. When choosing accommodation, study the city map, as it is divided into three parts.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Svetlogorsk 1 has few old buildings and is not so interesting for tourists, but choosing accommodation here, you will get a quiet, peaceful rest in a forest area. It takes 20 minutes to walk to the tourist area, so if you want peace and quiet, this place is for you, and staying here will be much more profitable. The train stops at Svetlogorsk 1 and 2. There is a sports complex here, and around it, there are many small cafes. My favorite is an Italian, small, cozy, and incredibly atmospheric “Erol” at 7 Yablonovaya Street. They serve very tasty pizza, ice cream, and desserts. A young couple came here from Italy in 2016 and brought a piece of it with them.<\/p>\n

“Svetlogorsk 3”<\/h3>\n

It is pleasant to walk here, quiet, calm, and comfortable to live, much closer to the sea and the center. The promenade starts here, next to the pioneer camp. It is always nice to look at it and remember childhood.<\/p>\n

“Interesting Facts” In one of the city’s cafes, 40 years ago, Voroshilov came up with the game “What? Where? When?” The cafe is located opposite the water tower. There is a mineral water spring nearby, but it only works in the morning hours. On Lenin Street, there is the forester’s house where a Soviet film was shot. In Gofman Lane, you can see a layout of Kenigsberg, which consisted of three cities: Libenicht, Kneiphof, and Altstadt. The organ hall is one of the best in Russia. Not long ago, only residents could enter Svetlogorsk 2 by car, the police always checked registration.<\/p>\n

“Tasty Food”<\/h3>\n

My favorite place is Local Baltic.<\/p>\n

The buffet breakfast is very rich. It’s better to reserve a table in advance during the season to make sure you get in; take care of it a couple of days in advance. The restaurant has a very knowledgeable and polite staff; you will definitely make friends with your waiter. It’s rare nowadays to see such friendliness. And the cuisine here is, of course, excellent; each dish is a little masterpiece. Boldly choose what you like and be sure to enjoy gastronomic pleasure. It is located within walking distance of the city center at 15 Gagarin Street.<\/p>\n

Every corner of the city deserves attention and time; walk, enjoy, savor the smell and atmosphere. There’s no need to rush here; it’s better to live and remember this beautiful city.<\/p>\n

Route<\/h3>\n

You can get to Svetlogorsk from the northern and southern railway stations by train or bus; the current schedule is available online. Of course, it will be more comfortable by car, it will take 30 minutes along the Primorsky Ring Road.<\/p>\n
